§01 · CYBERSECURITY SERVICES

Prepare. Assess. Maintain.

Be ready before trouble, know what’s actually at risk, and stay ahead as the business changes. 1st Defense CMMC Certified Assessors and the Shadowscape APS team deliver all three on one plan through Advanced Persistent Security (APS).

One plan builds the security program, proves it against CMMC, and keeps it current every quarter.

CYBER INTELLIGENCE INFORMS EVERY CYCLE
§02
FIELD NOTE

Most organizations don’t lack security tools. They lack answers: Is the organization ready? Will it hold up when an assessor checks? Do last year’s fixes still hold? Without those answers, security budgets go to whatever sounds most urgent.

§03
THE CYCLE

Three steps, one continuous cycle.

Each step answers one of those questions. Together, they turn security and compliance into one repeatable cycle. Start at any step.

03.1 · PREPARE

Prepare

Built with precision.

If an incident hit tomorrow, or an assessor arrived next month, most teams would be writing the plan as they went.

Gaps found, exposures tested, and the right policies, plans, and training in place and rehearsed before an attacker or an assessor tests them.

SUPPORTS CMMC AREAS INCLUDING

  • All 14 domains (policies & gap assessments)
  • Risk Assessment
  • Security Assessment
  • Awareness & Training
  • Incident Response
  1. 01

    Security Leadership & Roadmap

A vCISO who sets strategy, budget, and priorities, backed by gap assessments against CMMC, NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2, NIST CSF 2.0, HIPAA, ISO 27001, and other required frameworks.

  2. 02

    Risk & Exposure Testing

MITRE ATT&CK-driven risk assessments and risk quantification, plus penetration testing and vulnerability assessments that show what an attacker could reach and how to shut it down.

  3. 03

    Policies, SSP & Training

Policies, procedures, and a System Security Plan that match how the organization operates, plus awareness training that covers phishing and insider threats.

03.2 · ASSESS

Assess

Evaluated with confidence.

Most organizations believe they’re ready for CMMC. Few can prove it.

CMMC Certified Assessors measure controls and evidence against the same objectives a real assessment uses, whether for a self-assessment, a practice run, or certification.

Independence is built in. Organizations that Shadowscape or 1st Defense helped prepare are assessed through a partner C3PAO and a team with no advisory relationship to them.

COVERS

  • Level 1 (Self)
  • Level 2 (Self)
  • Level 2 (C3PAO)
  • All 14 domains
  • 320 assessment objectives
  1. 01

    Level 1 Self-Assessment

All 15 requirements checked the way an assessor checks them. Level 1 allows no POA&Ms, so every gap is closed before the SPRS entry and annual affirmation.

  2. 02

    CMMC Mock Assessment

A penalty-free dry run against the same objectives and evidence standard as the real assessment. Gaps surface while there’s still time to fix them.

  3. 03

    C3PAO Certification Assessment

The official Level 2 assessment through a trusted partner C3PAO. Lead CCAs assess under the C3PAO’s authority, and the C3PAO issues the certification.

03.3 · MAINTAIN

Maintain

Continuously improved.

Controls that passed last year can fail quietly this year, and no one is checking.

Systems, staff, and threats change every month. Continuous testing, threat intelligence, and quarterly reviews keep controls working and affirmations honest, and every finding feeds the next cycle.

SUPPORTS CMMC AREAS INCLUDING

  • All 14 domains (compliance upkeep)
  • Security Assessment
  • Risk Assessment
  • System & Information Integrity
  • Configuration Management
  • Incident Response
  1. 01

    Continuous Security Testing

Penetration testing, vulnerability assessments, threat hunting, and adversary emulation every quarter, catching new exposures while they’re still small.

  2. 02

    Threat & Risk Intelligence

Threat monitoring, real-time alerts, dark web and brand monitoring, and ongoing risk analysis, tuned to the threats targeting the organization’s industry and technology.

  3. 03

    Quarterly Program Reviews

Every quarter, the vCISO reviews priorities and progress with leadership and refreshes policies, incident plans, and tabletop scenarios as people, systems, and contracts change.

  4. 04

    Compliance Upkeep

Annual control and evidence reviews across all 14 CMMC domains, POA&M closeout within 180 days, SSP upkeep, and an impact review for every significant change, so the Affirming Official signs with confidence.

§04
WHAT CHANGES

Less guessing. Fewer vendors. Time back for IT.

The services are the work. These are the results.

01

Fixes, Not Just Findings

Findings without fixes are just a longer to-do list. APS delivers remediation guidance and the hands to help put it in place.
02

Capacity for IT

APS takes security work off the IT queue without taking control out of IT’s hands.
03

One Program

Governance, risk, security, and CMMC compliance run as one program, sized to the organization, not split across several vendors.
04

Advice Built to Hold Up

Recommendations come from CMMC Certified Assessors who evaluate security programs for a living. They’re built to survive scrutiny.
05

Honest About “Enough”

Sometimes current coverage is enough, and APS says so. Recommendations follow business need, not a sales target.
06

Compliance Comes Along

The same work supports the evidence CMMC and other frameworks require. Security and compliance stop being two projects.
§05
HOW TO START

Start with one project, or run it as a program.

PROJECT

A single engagement

One defined engagement: a gap assessment, penetration test, CMMC self or mock assessment, policy set, incident response plan, or tabletop exercise. Fixed scope, clear report, clear next steps.

ONGOING

An ongoing program through APS

Prepare, Assess, and Maintain as one Advanced Persistent Security (APS) plan, with a set block of support each quarter to use across security and CMMC compliance.

§06
GETTING STARTED

How to get started.

01

Arrange an APS consultation

A 30-minute conversation with the Shadowscape APS team about the environment, contract obligations, and top concerns. No obligation.

02

Get a clear starting point

One recommended first step, scoped to the organization: a gap assessment, a test, a self or mock assessment, or a plan.

03

Act, then measure again

Work the ranked plan, reassess, and confirm what changed before deciding what comes next.

COMMON QUESTIONS

01Is APS only for organizations pursuing CMMC?
No. Prepare and Maintain stand on their own for any organization reducing cyber risk. For organizations working toward CMMC or another framework, the same work supports compliance.
02Do we need a self-assessment or a C3PAO assessment?
The contract decides. Each solicitation states the required CMMC status: Level 1 (Self), Level 2 (Self), or Level 2 (C3PAO). Our team can confirm which applies and what it requires.
03How is a mock assessment different from a C3PAO assessment?
A mock assessment is a practice run against the same assessment objectives, with no effect on CMMC status. A C3PAO assessment is the official one, and the C3PAO issues the Level 2 certification.
04Is this a one-time project or an ongoing service?
Either. Many organizations start with a single engagement, such as a gap assessment, a penetration test, or a mock assessment. Others run Prepare, Assess, and Maintain as one ongoing APS program.
05We already have an IT provider. Does this replace them?
No. APS works alongside internal IT teams and managed service providers. They keep running the systems; APS takes security work off their queue and gives them a ranked plan.
06Can the team that helps secure us also take part in our certification assessment?
No. Certification has to be independent. Under CMMC rules, no one who consulted on an organization’s CMMC preparation in the past three years can take part in its certification assessment, and that applies to the C3PAO as well as its assessment team. When 1st Defense or Shadowscape has supported an organization, none of the people who advised it will be on its C3PAO assessment team.
